Making Hijrah to Saudi Arabia from the UK: A Practical Guide (2026)

A note before we begin

Hijrah is a spiritual decision. It belongs to you, your family and your teachers, and nothing in this guide is religious guidance.

What we can do is the practical side, the part people underestimate: residency, family visas, schooling, money, taxes and the property itself. This guide walks through all of it, plainly and honestly.

Can a British citizen live in Saudi Arabia permanently?

Yes, and since 2019 there has been a legal route that does not depend on a Saudi employer. Broadly, families move through one of these doors:

RouteWhat it gives youIndicative costFamily included?
Premium Residency, yearlyRenewable self-sponsored residency, work and business rightsSAR 100,000 per yearYes, spouse and children
Premium Residency, permanentLifetime residency, no renewalsSAR 800,000, one timeYes, spouse and children

The honest truth about property and residency

This is where most online advice goes wrong, so it is worth stating clearly: buying property in Saudi Arabia does not, by itself, grant you residency.

The exception is the Real Estate Owner route. If you own one property worth at least SAR 4,000,000 with no debt attached, that property qualifies you to apply for self-sponsored Premium Residency, with your spouse and children covered.

In practice, families planning Hijrah tend to take one of two paths. If your home budget reaches SAR 4m, buying that home can double as your residency route. If it does not, the company formation route, from SAR 29,500 in professional fees, is usually the fastest way to residency for you and your dependants, and you buy your home whenever you are ready.

Moving with your family

On Premium Residency, your spouse and children are covered under your status from day one. On the company formation and employment routes, you sponsor them as dependants after your own residence permit is issued, typically a matter of weeks.

Two practical points families ask about most:

Schools. Riyadh and Jeddah have established British, American and international schools. Indicative fees run from roughly £5,000 to £15,000 per child per year, and waiting lists at the popular schools mean you should apply early, ideally a term in advance.

Healthcare. Private hospitals in the main cities are excellent, and health insurance is a condition of residency. Family policies are straightforward to arrange once your residency is active.

Where UK families usually settle

One restriction to plan around: foreign ownership is not permitted in Makkah and Madinah themselves. Many families handle this by living in Jeddah, with the Haramain train putting both holy cities within an easy day trip.

CityWhy families choose itNotes
JeddahCoastal, relaxed, and the gateway to Makkah. The Haramain high-speed train reaches Makkah in about 35 minutes and Madinah in under two hoursThe most popular choice with Hijrah families from the UK
RiyadhThe jobs and business capital, largest city, most international schoolsBest if you or your spouse will work or run a business
MadinahQuiet, spiritual, lower cost of livingBuying property is restricted for foreigners there, so most families rent first
Eastern Province (Dammam, Khobar)Close to Bahrain, family-friendly compoundsPopular with professionals in energy and industry

Money: what you pay, and where

Saudi Arabia charges no personal income tax. Salaries, rental income from your property and your worldwide personal income are not taxed by the Saudi side. There is no annual property tax either. You pay purchase tax of 5% once, when you buy.

The UK side depends on whether you remain UK tax resident after you move. That is decided by the UK's residence rules, which count days in the UK and your ties here. Some people keep UK tax residency, many end it, and a few have continuing UK obligations such as tax on UK rental property. This is the one area where you should speak to a UK tax advisor before you fly, not after.

Banking is straightforward once you have residency: opening a Saudi account with your iqama is a routine step, and bringing funds over through licensed channels is fully permitted. Foreign ownership of property is now explicitly protected by law for non-Saudis.

A realistic first-year timeline

From first conversation to holding your keys and your family's residency, most families complete the journey in roughly four to seven months. The variable that slows people down most is not paperwork, it is deciding on the area and the home.
